God’s Greatest Desire
What is God’s greatest desire? Have you ever wondered about what God really wants?
What is God’s Greatest Desire?
1 Timothy 2:1-8 –
In 1 Timothy, Chapter 2, Paul uncovers for us the true desire of God toward man.
In verse 4, we are told that he “desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
The salvation of mankind is God’s Greatest Desire.
This is a simple, but truly awesome revelation. The God of the universe desires a personal relationship with you. Not only does He desire it, but He has provided a way for it to happen.
Personal Relationship Leads to Knowing God
In the Gospel of John, Chapter 14, verse 6, Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Put that into the context of what we have just learned in 1 Timothy 2:4 and we see this idea emerge, God desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of Jesus.
According to the original meanings of the word knowledge or “know,” this is not an intellectual knowledge, but an intimate knowledge.
John 3:16 is rendered as “whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” Again, the word “believe” in its true definition means “trust.”
Going back to I Timothy, 2:5-6, we read that “There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself a ransom for all.”
So, putting it all together, we see that God’s True Desire for us is an intimate, trusting relationship with Jesus so we can be saved from condemnation and separation from God.
The apostle Paul also shares his desire in this chapter, verse 8, “I desire therefore, that all men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.” In verse 1, Paul also instructs us that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks should be made for all men.
The Most Important Things
In this short passage, we see two important things:
- God’s Desire is for salvation and relationship with mankind through the sacrifice and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
- As a result of knowing this, and the fact that Paul has come into this kind of relationship with God, his desire has lined up with God’s desire, which drives him to pray for others, that they would come into this same relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
What is YOUR Desire?
How about you? Have you come into intimate relationship with God through Jesus Christ? Do you have a desire to see others come into this relationship as well? Do you pray for them?
